The project will begin with a kick-off event, including a local motivational speaker, overview of the project, pre-assessment health screening, information and samples of healthy snacks, project “buddy” selection and pedometer and activity log distribution.
Participants will walk/run, tracking their distance with verification of their buddy. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend toning class once a week.
Every other Monday, participants will meet at the Braxton County Amphitheatre to share their progress and participate in a health awareness session provided by health/nutrition experts.
A celebration, including post-assessment screening, will culminate the project.
At the beginning of September, the project will be advertised through the local newspaper and radio. A local organization will volunteer time to mark off the distances for the exercise trail located near Braxton County High School, Braxton County Middle School, and Days Hotel. Then, on September 17, a kick-off event will be held at Braxton County Amphitheatre, with Jamie Summerlin delivering a motivational presentation on the importance of being healthy. Participants will be provided an overview of the proposed project, complete a pre-assessment health screening, receive information on good nutrition and samples of healthy snacks, determine a project “buddy” and receive a pedometer and activity log.
Over the next eight weeks, “buddies” will track their walking/running distances, verifying each other’s activity log. They will also have the opportunity to attend complementary toning classes at the Amphitheatre near the walking trail once a week.
Every other Monday, beginning on October 1, participants will meet at the Braxton County Amphitheatre to share their progress and participate in a health awareness session provided by experts in the field. Topics will be related to physical activity, obesity and heart disease, diabetes, and nutrition. Team building activities will also be scheduled for the group. Each participant who attends a Monday awareness session and has logged physical fitness activity within the previous two weeks will have their name entered in a drawing for an incentive, including a pass for use of the Days Inn indoor pool and fitness center through the winter and other healthy rewards. Part of the final session will include a “Celebration of Success”, incentive prize drawings and post-assessment health screening.

At the young age of 39, I took on the greatest challenge of my life, an effort that pushed me both mentally and physically like I had never been challenged before. I completed a 3452 mile 100 day run across America, capped off with a 100 mile finish from Annapolis MD to Rehoboth Beach DE in under 24 hours, all to raise awareness and money in support of the men and women I consider my heroes, those that have worn and now wear the US Military’s uniform.
My book, “Freedom Run”, was released in April of 2013, detailing my journey to honor those who have bravely served, and describes the life-changing events of my run across America. MORE>
