Had an amazing time at the Gristmill Grinder 1/2 marathon this past weekend. It’s interesting what good weather and 7 pounds of less weight from last year can do for your time. I took a little over 3 minutes off of my course PR from last year, and felt great. Between the weight and the training I’ve been getting at CrossFit Morgantown, I definitely feel stronger on the climbs even though I haven’t put in all the miles I’ve wanted to. The weather has been a detriment to my outdoor lifestyle early on this year, but I’m starting to make up for it.
This week, we at Operation Welcome Home took 3 busloads of veterans from the Clarksburg VA hospital, Operation Welcome Home, and veterans from Wheeling to a Pittsburgh Pirates game. With about 150 veterans, family members, and friends, we took over section 312 and had a blast. It was very cool seeing the interaction amongst all the vets, especially as the older and younger vets shared stories between each other. It was almost like they served together, as the common thread they shared allowed the stories to just flow. Video coverage below:
This weekend I am running the Blue Ridge Foot Levelers Marathon, with about 7,400 feet in elevation change over the road course, which is labeled as America’s Toughest Road Marathon. Being as I’m a really smart guy, I’m stepping off around 2AM with a group of about 25 others and running a Double, which means we’ll run the course once, then step off at 0730 with the rest of the loonies and run the marathon again. Last year at the time, I was running the Rim2Rim2Rim run at the Grand Canyon, then turned around and ran the Pittsburgh Marathon the following week and set a personal best ever marathon time of 3:27. The week after this upcoming Double, I am running the Kalamazoo Marathon in Michigan, and hoping for the same result. We’ll see.
I will post the MyAthlete Live tracker on my Facebook and twitter pages so you can track me live on the race, and I am continuing to fundraise for Operation Welcome Home, so please donate to help support the heroes we are serving every day!

At the young age of 39, I took on the greatest challenge of my life, an effort that pushed me both mentally and physically like I had never been challenged before. I completed a 3452 mile 100 day run across America, capped off with a 100 mile finish from Annapolis MD to Rehoboth Beach DE in under 24 hours, all to raise awareness and money in support of the men and women I consider my heroes, those that have worn and now wear the US Military’s uniform.
My book, “Freedom Run”, was released in April of 2013, detailing my journey to honor those who have bravely served, and describes the life-changing events of my run across America. MORE>
