Freedom’s Run- A Small Community Success

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.” World Health Organization

West Virginia is often viewed as an unhealthy place to live. Much of this opinion unfortunately comes from real data. We are the #2 most obese state and #50 when it comes to trails. 4 years ago with the help of local partnerships we set out to change that. What is “normal” today for families? Most get little exercise, they drive everywhere, and activities are for a select group and always tied to outcomes. We set out to give opportunities in a small community by providing teaching, mentoring, opportunities, encouragement, and some nice trails for the setting. The goal was to spark cultural change, reattach children and families to nature and heritage, and produce mentors who will spread the themes deeper into each community.

It all started with Tiger on the Trail promoting non-competitive physical activity using “nature as the classroom”. In contrast to traditional health/physical education; program participants learned about health, fitness, nature and local history while hiking to and through local National Parks during school hours. Tiger on the Trail and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park partnership has evolved from local grassroots efforts and now involves all the Middle Schools in Jefferson County. In 4 years there has been over 3500 individual student hikes covering 9000 miles of trail.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a leader in the field of experiential, place-based education. In order to provide their unique selection of historical, environmental and wellness-based programs to the widest audience possible, the park wishes to assist regional schools with the cost of field trip transportation through funds raised by Freedom’s Run participants. With nearly 30% of West Virginia’s youth living in poverty, school field trips are essential to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience the health and intellectual benefits of spending time in our National Parks, regardless of their family’s financial ability to provide them with these experiences. Through the Jefferson County Middle School Hike Program, the 5th Grade Schoolhouse Ridge program, the yearly Storer College program and many more, Harpers Ferry NHP has been able to reach out to thousands of students in Jefferson County and the Eastern Panhandle. Funds raised through Freedom’s Run would go directly towards funding transportation for these programs and many others.

With the awareness we needed funds to achieve large goals, Freedom’s Run was born. The idea was to put on an event that gave citizens awareness of healthy living, promote outdoor activity, and in the process discover the rich history of the area- an Event for Health and Heritage. A collaborative group between leads at the Eastern Area Health Education Center, WVU Hospitals East, the National Park Service, Shepherd University, local citizens and businesses, and Two Rivers Heritage Partnership, teamed to create Freedom’s Run. We offer opportunity for all to engage in a new challenge with 5 events- 1 mile kids fun run, 5k, 10k, Half Marathon, and Marathon. The race raises funds for fitness trail building in our local elementary schools and supports initiatives of health and heritage.

With over 2000 participants, Freedom’s Run is the largest running event in West Virginia. 37 states were represented in the inaugural year, 42 states in the 2010, and 43 states in 2011. The event has been awarded 2011 and 2012 Road Runners Club of America Regional Marathon Championship. Over $50,000 has directly gone back to the community and additional grants have been acquired with the assistance we have given.

Projects Include

  • Page Jackson Community Trail and Garden
  • South Jefferson Elementary Outdoor Classroom and Trail
  • Driswood Elementary Fitness Trail
  • Rebuilt TA Lowery Elementary Greenhouse (destroyed by 2010 snow)
  • Ongoing large financial support to toward Hedgesville HS track

The Freedom’s Run Team has also created additional events in the community for other non profits and lends large support to a growing number of events. The Eastern Panhandle now hosts over 20 events, all increasing in size. Four years ago there were 3. There are also newly formed youth running clubs using the school based trails.

Shepherdstown has also established a leadership role in the growing field of running medicine and this evolved from Freedom’s Run. As the races became too busy the town needed an event headquarters to help with the daily work and assist new runners in getting healthy. We opened Two Rivers Treads- A Center for Natural Running and Walking in May 2010. Our customers are learning the benefits of good running form, barefoot, and flat footwear. If you run any of the roads or trails in our town, it is tough to spot a traditional running shoe. To spread our health message wider we founded the Natural Running Center, an education portal designed to teach healthier running and promoting more natural footwear.

Our most recent and important development has been the formation of Two Rivers Heritage Partnership – a non-profit with a mission is to raise awareness of the unique historical and natural resources that lie between the Potomac River and the Shenandoah River from the confluence at Harpers Ferry to Winchester VA and Cumberland MD. TRHP will raise funds and awareness through events such as Freedom’s Run and distribute resources back into the community.

Come join us October 13 , participate in an event, and support these worthy causes.

Marine Corps Marathon 2013 @ Washington DC
Oct 27 @ 12:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Pre-race and start line

The MCM start line is uniquely situated between the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. The location offers a distinct reminder to runners that this is not just any marathon. Situated between those actively protecting our country and the fallen heroes, who for generations have given their lives for our freedom, runners immediately recognize the MCM’s 26.2 mile journey is about shared sacrifice. Everyone at this event has given something. The Marines and other members of the U.S. armed forces give of themselves in service to our country. The runners give themselves over to a new lifestyle, a commitment to physical fitness and a desire to achieve. Synchronized by the impeccable timing device attached to each runner’s bib, the MCM course pulses with the energy of give and take from these two contributing forces. Marines motivate runners. Runners gain the admiration of Marines. The result is a day of accomplishment, satisfaction and cherished memories.

MCM Startline

The Marine Corps Marathon will begin at 7:40 a.m. for the wheelchair and hand cycle participants. Runners will start 7:55 a.m. It is recommended that runners arrive two hours prior to their start time to proceed through the security checkpoint, drop off bags and line up in the appropriate corral. The start line is located on Route 110 (all lanes) halfway between the Pentagon and Arlington Memorial Drive. The closest Metro access to the start is the Pentagon station (blue/yellow). Arlington Cemetery Station will be closed on Marathon morning until 8:30 a.m.

RUNNER’S VILLAGE HOSTED BY BOEING
Boeing_scrollerLocated in the Pentagon North Parking lot, Runners Village hosted by Boeing is the official launching pad for MCM participants.  Runners may access Runners Village by MCM shuttles from Crystal City or the Pentagon Metro Station (blue).  Essential pre-race support is provided to runners including the MCM Info Tent, oodles of portajohns, UPS Baggage Drop-off, New Skin anti-blister/anti-chafing station, prayer services at 6:00 and 6:45 a.m., water station and motivating music and announcements.  Just a short walk up the ramp from Runners Village delivers participants to the MCM start on Route 110.

BIBS
Bib with ExplanationRunners are required to wear the official participant bib with the number on front of their clothing.  The bib and pins will be provided at Packet Pick-up. MCM Participant Bibs include tear-off coupons along the bottom.

The coupons are to be exchanged for the following items and/or services: participant mock neck shirt at the Health and Fitness Expo by GE; post-race complimentary massage in the Finish Festival; and free sample of Michelob Ultra in the Finish Festival Beer Garden.

TIMINGMCM updated bib
ChronoTrack Timing Systems, Inc. records the results of runners along the course. The system utilizes a light-weight disposable UHF RFID tag that stays mounted on the runner’s bib, embedded in the reverse side.  No action is required of a runner beyond wearing the assigned bib.  The “B-tag” records a runner’s official time, beginning when a participant crosses the start line and concluding as he or she passes the finish, as well as split times every 5K along the course. Runners receive their B-tag on their race bib.

Gun time will be utilized in determining awards for the top three male and female finishers. All other awards are calculated by chip time.

VIP PORTA POTTY
Visit Brooks official merchandise store at the Health and Fitness Expo for your official MCM gear.  Spend $200 at the Expo store to gain access to the VIP Porta Potty on race day.  The VIP Porta Potty will be located at the start line.

COMPETITOR TIMELINE
Corral Configuration:  The MCM Start is located in Arlington, VA facing north on Route 110.  Corral markers featuring finish times between 2.5 and seven hours will indicate the proper location for runners to assemble.  For runners expecting to finish between 2.5 and 4.5 hours, corrals one through six will be located across both sides of Route 110.  For runners finishing the MCM between 4.5 and seven hours, corrals seven through eleven will be solely situated in the north bound lanes (Potomac River side) of Route 110.

Runners will line up by expected finish time on the start line and will be able to choose their appropriate corral on race morning.  Bib numbers are not related to corral assignments.  Below are the corral designations which will be labeled by signs in the starting area:

Start CorralsCourse Time Limit:  The howitzer will fire at 7:55 a.m. officially starting the 37th MCM. The MCM course will remain open until 3 p.m., just more than seven hours after gun time. The entire race field will cross the start line timing mats approximately 23 minutes after the starting pistol is fired.  This means the final runner will complete the MCM in six hours and 37 minutes. This is a slight change from previous years but it does not affect the required minimum pace which remains 14 minutes-per-mile.

Required Minimum Pace: All runners must maintain a 14 minute-per-mile pace to reach the Gauntlet and Beat the Bridge. A time cushion of two additional minutes-per-mile are afforded runners for the final 10K of the course after meeting the Beat the Bridge requirement.

MCM Gauntlet:  Runners must maintain 14 minute-per-mile pace to pass the MCM Gauntlet at mile 17.5 at the intersection of 14th Street and Madison Drive NW.  A vehicle will be in place to easily identify the necessary pace to maintain in order to reach the Gauntlet by 12:20 p.m.  Runners slower than the required pace will be detoured for safety reasons but will quickly rejoin the marathon course.  These participants may continue to run the MCM but will not complete an official marathon.  It is requested any runners rerouted at the Gauntlet not accept a finisher medal.

Beat the Bridge: Runners must maintain the 14 minute-per-mile pace to reach the 14th Street Bridge and successfully “Beat the Bridge” just before mile marker 20.  The 14th Street Bridge will reopen to vehicular traffic making it unavailable to runners after 1:05 p.m.  Any runners unable to “Beat the Bridge” will be required to board the straggler buses and be driven to the event finish area.

PACE TEAMSClif Pace Team
The Clif BAR Pace Team will be returning as the designated MCM Pace Team.   Each Pace Leader will run even splits (every mile will be run in the same amount of time) throughout the course.  By following a Pace Team leader, runners will cross the finish line within two minutes of a specific goal time.

Pace Teams will be provided for the MCM at following finish times:
3:05, 3:15, 3:25, 3:35, 3:45, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 5:00, and 5:30.

Meet the Clif Pace Team at the Expo
Runners can meet the Pace Team before the event at the Health and Fitness Expo. Ask about marathoning backgrounds, how they fuel themselves during the race, and any other helpful tips. Pace Leaders will also be handing out free Pace Bands.  Pacers act as friend, coach, and mentor. Pace Leaders Darris, Star, Mike and Lori share their passion and perspectives on running a marathon.

Why run Richmond? It’s the little things that add up. A great scenic course that takes you through some of Richmond’s most historic neighborhoods, culminating in a downhill finish in the heart of downtown. On-course support featuring live bands, DJs, spirit groups and Party Zones guaranteed to give you that extra burst of energy. Unique features, including junk food stops and wet washcloths along the course, as well as hot pizza and a complimentary massage to greet you at the finish line. Even an online registration system that doesn’t hit you with extra fees to sign up. It’s what led Runner’s World to confirm what we’ve been saying all along: The Anthem Richmond Marathon truly is “America’s Friendliest Marathon”!

Runner’s World Magazine named us a “Must Do” marathon in 2005 & 2009 and twice selected us as the site of their Marathon Challenge!

The January 2005 issue of Runner’s World magazine had this to say in touting Richmond as one of the 12 must-do marathons that offer “big fun, big scenery, big rewards”:

This marathon starts and finishes in charming historic downtown Richmond, once the capital of the south. The scenic, fast loop course takes in all of the city’s old neighborhoods, traveling up Monument Avenue, past statues of Confederate soldiers and Richmond native and tennis star Arthur Ashe, through the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, then alongside the James River. Along with the typical water and sports drink stops, this is probably the only race in the country that offers junk food stops, at miles 16 and 22, stocked with Gummy Bears, cookies, and soda. There are also two wet-washcloth stations, at miles 17 and 23, perfect for cleaning up for your finish-line photo. Three party zones set up along the way with free food, prize giveaways, and noisemakers for spectators and family means lots of enthusiastic, cheering support. The last mile features a fast downhill to the finish in the trendy Shockoe Slip area, where there are plenty of postrace goodies, including bagels, fruit, and pizza, and a band to celebrate your finish. (Runner’s World, January 2005)

The Anthem Richmond Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier!

Along with VIP Treatment, All Marathon Participants Receive…

Every participant receives an official long sleeve technical race shirt, a custom medal at the finish line, and is admitted to a special post-race celebration with plenty of free food, drink, and lots of smiles and pats on the back. Finishers can redeem a free certificate to recognize and commemorate their accomplishment. Water stops are positioned at the start and every two miles until Mile 20, then every mile thereafter. Diamond Springs water and Mountain Blast POWERade (the blue stuff) are available at every water stop on the race course. Assorted flavors (vanilla, chocolate & citrus orange) of Accel Gel are available at Miles 14 and 21. Marathoners looking for an extra burst of energy in the waning miles will want to make sure to hit the Junk Food Stop at Miles 16 and 22. Wet wash cloths are available at Miles 17 and 23. Porto-johns are stationed at the Start/Finish and adjacent to every water stop. Medical attention is available along the course.

Starting Corrals

Participants in the marathon will be corralled for the start based on predicted times listed on their completed entry form.

7 Hour Course Time Limit

All participants must be able to finish the marathon in 7 hours. In order to do so, you will need to maintain a 16:02 per mile pace or you will be asked to move to the sidewalk to enable the reopening of the streets to vehicular traffic. At that time, there will no longer be traffic protection, medical aid or water stops offered. There will be four designated checkpoints along the course with shuttles available to take participants back to the finish area if anyone does not reach a checkpoint by these times:

101 Mile Freedom Run to Kick Off the 2013 Military Bowl!

2013 Military Bowl Freedom Run

Marine Corps Veteran and Freedom Runner Jamie Summerlin will help kick off the 2013 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium with a 101-mile run from Shepherdstown, W.Va., to Annapolis, Md., reliving the final day of his 3,452-mile Freedom Run across America to honor Veterans in 2012.

Military Bowl Freedom Run Sponsor

Beginning the morning of Thursday, December 26, Jamie will step off from Two Rivers Treads, the store that donated his 10 pair of shoes for the Freedom Run. Finishing 24 hours later, he will attend the Medal of Honor reception at the Governor’s Mansion, participate in the Military Bowl Parade and be recognized during the Military Bowl.

2014 Gristmill Grinder Half Marathon @ Babcock State Park
Apr 19 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Babcock 2014 – 10 years of running at Babcock!
As of January 21st – our Half-marathon trail run is FULL and registration is closed!! The 5k Walk is still OPEN however – and you can register via active.com or we can email you the form if you like. If you want the form just email us and we will get it right out to you——

We can’t believe this is year 10 for our Babcock run- how time does fly! We went from a group of forty runners running there the 1st year, (all hypothermic as I recall thanks to 35 degree rain and sleet) and on a different course… to now what is a favorite for many runners from all over the mid-atlantic region. The last 2 years the event has sold out at about 300 runners and we continue to have families and friends join us for our fun walk to the Gristmill and back. We have had fantastic community support with so many smiling volunteers handing out water and words of encouragement. And of course- what about those trail runners- joyfully running through the words, picking each other up, supporting each other through it all. The trail running community is such a wonderful group of people. Of course, add to the mix the almost magical feel of running at Babcock. Incredible scenery, rhodo tunnels, waterfalls and challenging running….. WOW –  it just doesn’t get much better!

Some photos from our 2013 run……

The Race

Directions to the Park and Lodging

Babcock State Park, WV is located on Route 41, 15 minutes east of the U.S. 19 and Route 60 intersection. Again this year the Park is OPEN on race day! That means that camping and cabins are available at the Park. There are cabins along the course and Glade Creek as well as near the Mann’s Gorge overlook. For reservations at the park or more info contact the park at 800-CALL-WVA or go to http://www.babcocksp.com/

Accommodations in the area are plentiful! There are many cabins and campgrounds around the area, just 15-20 minutes away. for more info, use our “Lodging…” link on the sidebar or contact us by email- we will be happy to help you.

Some special deals and discounts for participants are available, use the contact form to request more information.

Packet Pickup

We will plan to have two packet pickup options again this year, same as last year.

Option 1: Friday, April 18th, 2014 5-7pm – we will have packet pickup in downtown Fayetteville at Waterstone Outdoors! Waterstone is located on the corner right beside the Courthouse- you can’t miss it. Come by friday if you can- get your stuff – and check out this cool shop and town.

Option 2: Race day morning packet pick up will be from 8:30-9:30 at the Start/Finish area. This will be pretty hectic so shoot for friday if you can…..See directions to Start/Finish area below!!

Enter Babcock State Park at the Main Entrance. Go past the Gristmill, left and up the paved road. Continue past the lake & pool parking lot to the Sugar Camp Run Picnic Area. This will be the Start & Finish for the race.

Remember- Packet pick up will begin at 8:00 am in the morning and go to 9:30.

Please note – there will NOT be race day registration and we have a cap of 280 runners!!! Register early this year…..

The Race will start at 10:00 am, the Walk begins at 10:10.

Spectator Access-

There are several great places to hang out and watch the race- and they all have a great view! One is at the Gristmill itself, runners come by early- about 10:15 and then again about an hour later at mile 11. Two other great spots– when you come into the main entrance you can take the first right to Mann’s Creek Gorge Overlook. About a mile up the road you will see a beautiful overlook on your left. The course goes right thru this overlook- it is a great place for photos. The first runners get there about 10:20. If you continue on out the road you will come to another picnic area and overlook. Plenty of parking there and it is the 6 mile mark for runners. Be sure and take your camera everywhere you go in the park!!

Post Race Eats

There are several excellent eateries in Fayetteville – Cathedral Cafe, Gumbo’s, Pies & Pints, Secret Sandwich Society and DiOGi’s to name a few.  Fruit, Pasta Salad, water and more sports drinks will be at the finish.

You may also contact Donnie Hudspeth, Race Director, at 304-575-3294 or by email at[email protected]

The 2014 Babcock Gristmill Grinder is again in the Trail Runner Magazine “Trophy Series”.

The Course
The half marathon trail run consists of a “figure 8” loop course. It begins with a short road section at the beginning before turning left and jumping onto a single track trail named “Triple Creek”. This single-track trail leads runners into a wilderness area crossing…You guessed it- three creeks. Climbing to a high point on the rim at the intersection with the “Wilderness Trail” you can see across the Glade Creek Canyon. Nice view- you will soon be on the rim way across the canyon on the Skyline Trail! The Wilderness trail then widens and drops down to the road near the Gristmill. Runners cross the bridge at the Gristmill, turn right and run up the road and then left and down toward the cabins and soon are back in the woods on “Skyline”. This trail is well named! After a steep, short climb the Skyline parallels the cliff line and offers several beautiful overlooks.

This is a race though so don’t dawdle! Come back and check the overlooks out another day. After the initial climb, the trail is gradual and rolling. It is classic and beautiful trail running. A water stop and short road section follows at the end of the trail, that takes you down to Mann’s Creek. A left turn takes you onto the “Narrow Gauge Trail”.

This trail is rugged, and spectacular! Waterfalls, rocks, mud, everything a trail runner could ever hope for. Runners will eventually cross Glade Creek on the “Bouncy Bridge” (aka – the very slippery bridge when wet!) The trail then begins a gradual climb up to and past the Gristmill again. (Here comes the Grind…) After passing the Gristmill, runners take the “Lakeview” trail on the left, up to and around Boley Lake to the road near the finish. There is a gradual uphill grade approaching the finish.

Three aid stations, at miles 2.5, 6 and 11 will have water, sports drink, moral support and communications.

2014 Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Double Marathon @ Blue Ridge Mountains
Apr 26 @ 6:00 am – 5:00 pm

Local runners continue to craft one of the most challenging and beautiful marathons on the east coast. What began in 2010 with 6,140 feet of elevation change has grown each year with this year’s total being 7,430 feet of total elevation change, thus maintaining the title of America’s Toughest Road Marathon.

But organizers felt bad for the half marathon participant so 2014 runners will now have the opportunity to tackle America’s Toughest Road Half Marathon. More than 3600′ of elevation change awaits you on the half course.  For those familiar with the full marathon course…the half now incorporates both Mill Mountain and Peakwood.

And for those looking for something a little more tame, why not check out the Star K.  This 10K route takes up the parkway to the neon star overlooking Roanoke and back to the finish line.

The uphill portions of these routes will test each runner’s strength and endurance while the equally challenging downhill sections are sure to weed out those who are unprepared. The breathtaking views and stunning Blue Ridge Mountain scenery will offer some reprieve to runners as they persevere to the finish line! Are you up for the challenge of America’s Toughest Road Marathon, Half Marathon, and Star K?

The West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners is pleased to offer the 12th annual Highlands Sky Trail Run, the ultimate ultrarun in the Mountain State. The event is centered at Canaan Valley Resort State Park while most of the course is in the surrounding Monongahela National Forest.

The course traverses Roaring Plains and Dolly Sods Wilderness through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain in West Virginia. Dolly Sods is an area of high elevation, windswept plains ranging from 2500 to 4700 feet elevation. Trail terrain varies from woodland paths, rock and boulder, to upland bogs, through northern hardwoods at lower elevations, to Red Spruce and heath barrens above 4000 feet. Canaan is the highest large valley east of the Mississippi. The Valley creates the headwaters of the Blackwater River and has a unique environment composed of wetlands and uplands with vegetation characteristic of more northern latitudes.
