Meet the Author: Jamie Summerlin – Freedom Run

 Start Date & Time: November 9, 2013 11:00 AM

End Date & Time: November 9, 2013 4:00 PM

When Jamie Summerlin felt the calling to do something more meaningful with his life, the U.S. Marine came up with an extreme idea. His desire to bring attention and assistance to wounded veterans led to a 100 – day, 3,452 – mile run across America. His journey was intended to inspire those who sacrificed for America’s freedom, but along the way Summerlin realized he was the one being inspired. Freedom Run not only tells the story of Summerlin’s amazing run across America and his attempt to raise awareness and money for charitable organizations that serve wounded U.S. veterans, but it reveals the heartfelt stories of the many veterans he met along the way. Beginning in Coos Bay, Oregon, and ending in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Summerlin’s trek across the nation and the stories of the veterans he encountered serve as an inspiring and eye – opening tale of courage, determination, and honor in America.

“Freedom Run” is a captivating book that is not only a story of one man’s amazing run across the US, but also a story about the true American spirit.

Morgantown, W.Va. – Sept. 25, 2013 … Ultramarathoner and Marine Corps veteran Jamie Summerlin will present his new book Freedom Run: A 100-Day, 3,452-Mile Journey Across America to Benefit Wounded Veterans at the University Town Center Wal-Mart store, located at 6051 University Town Centre Drive, Morgantown, WV. 2014 Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Double Marathon @ Blue Ridge Mountains
Apr 26 @ 6:00 am – 5:00 pm

Local runners continue to craft one of the most challenging and beautiful marathons on the east coast. What began in 2010 with 6,140 feet of elevation change has grown each year with this year’s total being 7,430 feet of total elevation change, thus maintaining the title of America’s Toughest Road Marathon.

But organizers felt bad for the half marathon participant so 2014 runners will now have the opportunity to tackle America’s Toughest Road Half Marathon. More than 3600′ of elevation change awaits you on the half course.  For those familiar with the full marathon course…the half now incorporates both Mill Mountain and Peakwood.

And for those looking for something a little more tame, why not check out the Star K.  This 10K route takes up the parkway to the neon star overlooking Roanoke and back to the finish line.

The uphill portions of these routes will test each runner’s strength and endurance while the equally challenging downhill sections are sure to weed out those who are unprepared. The breathtaking views and stunning Blue Ridge Mountain scenery will offer some reprieve to runners as they persevere to the finish line! Are you up for the challenge of America’s Toughest Road Marathon, Half Marathon, and Star K?

  • What: Full & Half Marathon. StarK (10K). Walking Half. YMCA Kids Marathon
  • Where: Roanoke, VA and Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Date: April 26, 2014
  • Start Time: 7:35 am
  • Start/Finish: Elmwood Park/Jefferson Street (downtown Roanoke)
  • Total Elevation Change: ~7,430 ft. (full), ~3,600 ft. (half).
  • Most Difficult Section: Roanoke Mountain on Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Awards: All runners receive finisher medals plus these additional awards based on place.
  • Beneficiary: Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Honorary Race Chair: Rep. Bob Goodlatte (Va)
  • Magnificent Views: Plenty

Net proceeds from this race will go to Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway – the official National Park Service Blue Ridge Parkway’s 501(c)(3) membership organization for visitors to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway works tirelessly to protect, preserve, and enhance the Blue Ridge Parkway – a national treasure!

The organizers would like to thank the National Park Service for its support of this event. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Honorary Race Chair Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Roanoke.
